Confidence Building

Neil always liked the weekends.

It wasn't because it marked another week of him not being killed by his profession, nor was it the fact that whatever mook was hiring him usually anted up on Fridays, and it certainly wasn't the gaggle of Beacon girls that wanted to explore Downtown Vale for the day.

No, the reason he liked weekends was that his sister Glaucia came to visit from her classes at Signal. The small rabbit Faunus would practically bounce into his apartment with the broadest smile, talking non-stop about what she learned or who she met.

She brought life into his weekends. Laughter and giggles where there is only emptiness and a hollow lie, like an electric spark that lightened up the world just a little bit.

This visit was different.  Neil could tell right from the moment he answers the door with his usual grin, Glaucia's head is drooped, her ears covering her face alongside her hair. At first, he didn't question it, thinking she was just missing her friends or something.

"Come on in Glau." He says with a flourish of his hands, imitating hotel doormen. Glaucia ,not even looking up to meet his face, walks in quickly and flounders onto his only couch. Her face pressed into the cushions.

Now he knew something was up, his grin faltering into a thin line as he tried to rack his mind to what it could be. Sitting next to Glaucia, he patted her back as muffled cries emanated from her. Her body shaking with each sob.

He wasn't equipped with handling these emotional things, his own psyche a blundering mess of psychosis and neurosis. Neil knew he couldn't just leave her in such a state though.

"Glaucia?" He asks, moving down to the ground beside the couch to be eye-level with the Faunus.  "Hey, c'mon. I can't do anything if you don't tell me what it is."

As he expected, all that met his ears was a muffled response.
