(From) Man Made Monsters (also abbreviated as FM3 or FNTM) is a prequel fanfiction series for RWBY that officially premiered on June 22, 2022. It is written by Carus E. Lumen in a transcript format, intended to make it seem more like the animated show.

A "Quartz" Trailer was released on February 2, 2022, intended to act as a sneak peek and preview for the team consisting of the series' four main heroes.

Synopsis[]

"Set decades before Team RWBY was born, the kingdoms are still recovering from their Great War, and in the shadows of secrecy, a terrible plot is underway. Can four would-be Huntsmen come together to combat the looming threats that tie not just to each of them, but the past and future of Remnant itself? Forget the magic of fairy tales; welcome to the mad science of monsters..."

The main team from the first preview

Like the original show, the "Quartz" Trailer was made to act as a preview for (From) Man Made Monsters, telling its own story set before the series' start. Unlike the original trailers, instead of one for each protagonist and named after their individual colors, it featured all four heroes in different scenarios, and titled in a way that wouldn't hint to how their team would be formed. It was officially released on February 2, 2022, intended to be seven years after the announced passing of Monty Oum.

Episodes[]

Volume 1 is planned to contain thirteen chapters. The first, "A Dark and Stormy Night", was released on June 22, 2022 (the date of Monty's birthday), and a new chapter was planned to be released every two weeks on Wednesday. Due to the death of Carus' grandmother, however, the series was put on hiatus until November 2, when it continued with its second chapter, "Welcome to the Show", in memory of her as "one of [the story's] first fans". It is still planned for new installments to come out every other Wednesday.

The first Volume primarily focuses on uniting the team and the early struggles they go through trying to work with their new partners. It also acts to inform the audience of the ways Remnant as a setting works, since Carus wants the story to be enjoyable by both veterans of RWBY and newcomers that never watched the show.

Development[]

The series idea began in February 2016 in a topic channel for RWBY on the trivia app QuizUp. Carus E. Lumen discussed OCs with another user, Joseph Conner, and together they created a team based on classic movie monsters. Though they both developed names and designs for the characters, Carus had more ideas for a potential story with them, but since Joseph lost interest in the fandom, he agreed that Carus could have ownership of the team.

Over the next few years, even as Carus' own interest in the main series waned, he brainstormed how to develop the story, mostly on another app Amino after QuizUp began to decline in popularity. He decided to write the story in transcript form, similar to what he did for each episode of RWBY's first three Volumes on the RWBY Wiki, to make it seem more like the show.

An early draft of the "Quartz" Trailer was posted in August 2019 for a contest on Amino, but the official release was uploaded to several sites starting on February 2, 2022, the announcement date of Monty Oum's passing seven years prior.

On June 22, 2022, the first chapter, "A Dark and Stormy Night", was released. After this, however, Carus' grandmother passed away, and the series was put on hiatus until some time in the future, which turned out to be November 2, 2022 with the release of "Welcome to the Show". Another short break was needed to finish the third chapter, "Team Spirit", a week after its intended release, which Carus admitted "probably won't be the last time I'm late to my own deadlines, so keep that in mind when checking for new updates".

Future[]

As of now, the main series is in development, and a new chapter is to be released every other Wednesday. Thirteen episodes are planned for Volume 1, and each will be published on multiple host sites.

Depending on how well-received the series might be, there are also plans for additional commissioned content released simultaneously, such as:

  • Artwork for each chapter, intended to act as a "thumbnail" image and cover.
  • Theme songs that could work in animatic openings for each Volume.
  • Dubbed audio adaptations uploaded to YouTube, performed by various voice actors.
  • A spin-off comedy series similar to RWBY Chibi, possibly illustrated in a 4koma style.
  • Fanon Wiki pages created and maintained by fans instead of the writer himself.
  • A Patreon page for followers to financially support the cast and crew.

Trivia[]

  • The title (From) Man Made Monsters was inspired by the 1941 Universal horror film, Man-Made Monster. Like the "Quartz" Trailer, the name was chosen so the main team's formation would not be obvious, though it contained the initials of its heroes, often glowing in a different-colored light, as a clue for what the true acronym would be.
  • Multiple franchises helped shape the plot for the series, most notably the Universal Classic Monsters series of black-and-white films between the 1920s and 1950s. Other influences include the past works of Monty Oum, such as Haloid and the Dead Fantasy series, as well as Monty's favorite anime.
    • Carus also noticed a parallel of themes between this monster-based fanfiction and the canon show's fairy tales similar to Mattel's toy line Monster High and its spin-off Ever After High, though he has very little knowledge of either.
